City of Millbrook holds Memorial Day ceremony
MILLBROOK, Ala. (WAKA) – The City of Millbrook has held its Memorial Day Observance Ceremony in advance of the federal holiday.
Today’s event honored fallen service members and celebrated the lead-up to America’s 250th anniversary.
The laying of the wreath was conducted by Mayor Al Kelley and Rev. Dr. Brannon Bowman of Millbrook Presbyterian Church.
Taps was performed by Clarence McMillian.
The Millbrook Memorial Day ceremony is held each year on the Friday before Memorial Day.
“It’s very special to see the city and the community come out and honor them and just remember them and speak their names,” Kimberly Davis, the mother of fallen Millbrook veteran Joshua Lancaster, told Action 8 News.
“A lot of folks think this is the kick off of the summer season, and it actually is, but that’s not the reason for it. The reason for it is to honor our comrades who have passed away in service to our country,” Bill Roberts, who attended the ceremony, said.
“I want to thank all these young men and women of the Scout troops,” Millbrook Mayor Al Kelley said. “It’s so great to see the young people so involved in a Memorial Day celebration that they really don’t know anything about. It’s our job to teach them. It’s our job to carry on through them for the next many, many years, Memorial Day celebrations and not just on Memorial Day, but every day.”
Memorial Day was declared a federal holiday in 1971 and is observed annually on the last Monday in May.
