Behind the Biscuits: Ryan Spikes
MONTGOMERY, Ala (WAKA)- Ryan Spikes of the Biscuits grew up in Georgia playing competitive travel baseball and in the highest high school classification. After years of training and an offer to play college ball at the University of Tennessee on the table, Spikes decided to go a different road and headed straight for the MLB Draft.
However, on the night of the draft, despite his excitement, Spikes was able to put all that aside and go to bed with the fate of his professional career still up in the air.
“It was pretty nerve-racking for sure, but I kind of just let God handle it. I had a pretty good idea I was going to go I just didn’t know when. So, I wasn’t really too worried. In theory, I was nervous, but at the same time I kinda knew,” explains Spikes.
Spikes would eventually hear his name call in the third round of the 2021 MLB Draft as the 100th overall pick. That’s when Spikes would start forging his own path, out on his own for the first time.
“It’s kind of like okay you’re used to your mom doing all your laundry for you, you know you always come home and get a meal on the table, your parents probably tell you, hey it’s time to go to bed. Now, it’s just like okay you’re a grown man now, you’re here, do what you need to do, you have a job now, still a game, but it’s a job. It’s just that transition from kind of being sheltered in a way to just thrown out there in the fire,” says Spikes.
As he continues to go on this journey through the minor leagues, Spikes has this piece of advice for those trying to achieve the same dream.
“Have fun. I feel like that seems cliche, and that can probably get jaded a little bit in the journey all the way there, because you might run into a problem where it’s like comparing myself to the next guy or
whatever it may be just make sure you have fun,” explains Spikes.
You can catch Spikes and the rest of the Biscuits at home this weekend as they finish up their series with the Rocket City Trash Pandas. Next week, the butter and blue will be on the road for a six- game series at Biloxi.
