Property Records: Montgomery City Council member lives in different district from one she represents
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WAKA) – Property records show a member of the Montgomery City Council lives in a different district than the one she represents.
City Council member Marche Johnson has represented District Three since 2021, but a search of Montgomery County property records shows Johnson purchased a home in District 7 in 2024.
Johnson is a military veteran, and records show the home was purchased with a VA loan, which requires the military member to live in the home. Johnson also gets a property tax exemption, which is also only given for a primary residence.
Johnson told Action 8 News she did not want to comment on her residency.
At a press briefing today, Action 8 News asked Mayor Steven Reed if the city would be looking into whether Johnson is eligible to serve on the council because she no longer lives in her district.
“I don’t have a comment on it,” Reed said. “Councilor Johnson has been doing a great job serving her district and her community, and I think serving the city. I think for us, we focus on how we can continue to service the residents of the city and will let that handle itself, and I’m sure councilor Johnson will comment at the time she feel it’s appropriate.”
By law, council members are required to be residents of the district they represent for at least six months prior to their election and must live in the district during their term of office.
