MARENGO COUNTY, Ala. (WAKA) – The Alabama Department of Transportation has opened the final section of the Linden Bypass to traffic, marking a major milestone for the West Alabama Highway.
Motorists can now travel a four-lane route connecting US-43 south of Linden to SR-69 north of the city. When additional work is completed later this summer, the four-lane divided highway will fully serve as SR-303 and complete the Linden Bypass.
The project is the first segment of the West Alabama Highway announced by Governor Kay Ivey in 2021 to improve transportation infrastructure and economic opportunities across west Alabama.
According to ALDOT, the new bypass is designed to move through traffic and heavy trucks around downtown Linden, improving safety, reduce congestion and create a more efficient route for travelers and freight carriers.
Benefits of the Linden Bypass
- Improves safety by reducing truck traffic through downtown Linden.
- Enhances traffic flow on US-43 and local roadways.
- Creates a more efficient route for freight movement and regional travel.
- Strengthens connections between communities across west Alabama.
- Supports economic growth by improving access for businesses and industry.
- Reduces travel delays for local residents and visitors.
“This is a major step toward completion of the Linden Bypass and an important investment in the future of west Alabama,” said Matt Ericksen, ALDOT Southwest Region Engineer. “This project improves safety, enhances mobility and creates new opportunities for economic growth throughout the region.”
Although the route is now open to traffic, construction activities remain underway. Motorists should use caution, follow all posted signs and obey reduced speed limits while crews complete the remaining work.
