What The Tech App of the Day: Long Shout
BY JAMEY TUCKER, Consumer Tech Reporter
Every now and then I come across an app that’s surprisingly useful, even though it’s incredibly simple. Long Shout is one of those apps.
Imagine you’re at a concert, a ballgame, or a festival. It’s so loud that yelling at your friends is pointless, and they may never notice a text message. Instead, you type what you want to say into Long Shout.
Within seconds, your message fills the entire screen in large, bold letters that are easy to read from across a crowd. Need to ask, “Can you grab me a drink?” Or “How much longer are we staying?” Just hold up your phone and let it do the talking.
It’s just as handy in quiet places. Maybe someone’s asleep on the couch and you don’t want to wake them. Instead of whispering across the room, you can silently flash a message like, “I’m going to bed during the next commercial.”
The app also lets you customize the font and colors, and if you rotate your phone into landscape mode, your message becomes a scrolling marquee that’s even easier to read from a distance. One reviewer says the app even helped them let another driver know a brake light was out without having to roll down a window or shout through traffic.
Long Shout was created by independent game designer Greg Wohlwend, who was named to Forbes’ 30 Under 30 in gaming back in 2014. It’s a fun reminder that great apps don’t always have to be complicated or powered by artificial intelligence.
Sometimes the best ideas solve one problem—and solve it really well.
Best of all, Long Shout is completely free, contains no ads, and doesn’t require any in-app purchases. Once you see it in action, you’ll probably think of several situations where you wish you’d had it.
