11 cases of cyclosporiasis confirmed so far in Alabama
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WAKA) – The Alabama Department of Public Health says 11 cases of cyclosporiasis has been confirmed so far in the state.
Chief Medical Officer Dr. Karen Landers says while the number is at 11, they expect more cases as more people may be tested based upon symptoms and awareness.
Dr. Landers says while there is no clear link to the nationwide outbreak or any identified food vehicle, the state is looking into one possible case that may have become ill from exposure in another state.
Cyclosporiasis is the intestinal illness caused by the microscopic parasite cyclospora, and symptoms typically develop about two days to two weeks after exposure, including prolonged watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, fatigue, loss of appetite and weight loss.
Although the infection can be treated with a combination antibiotic, the illness can last weeks if left untreated and may lead to dehydration.
ADPH says it will continue to monitor and educate regarding preventive measures related to the illness.
