First responders learn how to stay safe around electricity
PRATTVILLE, Ala. (WAKA) – Downed power lines can turn an emergency into a deadly situation, which is why local first responders spent a day training to stay safe when electricity is involved.
Firefighters, police officers and volunteer firefighters learned how to respond to high-voltage emergencies from Alabama Power.
Safe-T-Zone is a 45-minute, high-voltage safety program taught by Alabama Power line workers. The custom-built trailer has 14,400 volts of electricity, and Line workers demonstrate hazardous scenarios involving both overhead and underground power lines.
Some of the Scenarios included pulling a meter at a house fire and how to best handle downed power lines.
About 1,000 people die every year from accidental electrocutions in the United States.
