The cold didn’t stop hundreds of middle and high school students from taking part in the Dream Marches on Youth Day of Service.

Hundreds of middle schoolers and high schoolers worked on the Montgomery portion of the Selma to Montgomery historic trail as we near the 50th anniversary.

The threat of rain did put a damper on some of their projects, like painting. But they were still able to pick up trash, put down pine straw and other small clean up efforts.

A local high schooler came up with this idea for the day of service and has been working to get it organized since June.

A grandfather took his granddaughter and niece all the way from Michigan to this event. He marched in the historic movement 50 years ago. Glen Peterson, marched on day two, 50 years ago said, “I was looking for some commemorative events. I know there are going to be a lot of things at the actual 50th anniversary and it just sounded real crowded to me and I thought I found this on the internet and I thought it would be a more interesting thing to do and an educational opportunity for the girls.”

This event was funded by the City of Montgomery and the Montgomery County Commission, as well as many other sponsors including Alabama News Network.
