Nearly 2,000 runners laced up their shoes for Montgomery’s first full marathon. They represented at least half the states in the country… While some did a little cheering, others hoped to sike out their competitors. “One time me and my dad had a race and it was a few other times I had beat him in races,” Said 9-year-old Jonathan Cobb. He was hoping to beat his dad in the 5K. Confident or not, a gunshot signaled the moment runners had to hit the pavement to run the Montgomery Marathon. Runners chose between the 1 mile fun run or the 5K; the half marathon; or the city’s first ever full marathon — 26.2 miles. “The first half of the full marathon is very hilly. For those doing the full marathon, you go out and then you get to tour Maxwell Air Force Base,” Said Hardy Sellers with Montgomery Multisport. You hear you’re never too old or young to run a race — that’s the case for 6-year-old Claire Webb. She ran the 5K in 33 minutes. She says it was all for fun. “All of you can just get fit and have fun!” Said Webb. But for some, the message is bigger. While Bryan Morseman of New York was the first to finish the full marathon, he says it’s not about beating his record, rather for his 8-month-old Liam, who is battling Spina Bifida… “We don’t know if he’ll be able to walk or not,” Said Morseman in tears. “And being an active family as we are it kind of hurts in a way, but you just keep pushing knowing that no matter what God’s watching over us… and he’s going to do whatever he can do.” For some of these racers who qualified, next up is the Boston Marathon, which will take place on April 20.
