Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange held re-election campaign kickoff at Central in downtown Montgomery Monday evening. Strange took office in 2009…so we went out to ask residents how they would grade him.

Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange wants to keep his job for another four years. And he’s working to get more supporters. We asked Montgomery residents how they would grade Strange’s job performance.

“I would say a B,” one resident told us.
“A” another said.
“I would give Mayor Strange a B,” said another resident.
“A D” said someone else.

The grades were mostly favorable.

“I think he’s done a lot of good for the city and the surrounding areas,” said Elizabeth Thompson.

“Because of the city improvements, his outreach towards the community, his involvement with the community,” Shai Hudson said.

But some say there is room for improvement, especially on Montgomery’s westside.

“You’ve got the westside of Montgomery right now in need of construction bad,” said Willie Patton. “I mean, the city has got houses that need to be torn down.”

“Just more expansion of the homes,” Hudson said. “If I work on the westside, I should be able to live on the westside.”

We took the concerns to Strange at his campaign gathering Monday evening. He says work has been done on the westside.

“We’ve put a number of dollars into façade renovation,” he said. “If you went over there a year ago versus today, nine or ten buildings that are different today than they were back then. In fact, we’re going to have the environmental park opening in the latter part of April.”

But Strange says he will continue to focus efforts on that part of town.

“Within the next couple of weeks or so, we’re going to have twenty plus houses there in Lanier Place, lease to own type scenarios. The streetscape that we’ve been working so hard on, we’re now ready to begin acquisition for utility rights.”

Todd Strange is running against Montgomery County Commissioner Dan Harris, State Board of Education Vice President Ella Bell, Former Congressman Artur Davis and community activist Jon DaVoe.
The election is August 25th.
