From the West Alabama Newsroom– The unemployment rate climbed slightly in Dallas County but labor officials say there are hundreds of active jobs available right now for people who want to work.

Labor officials say there are 800 jobs openings within a 50 mile radius of Selma.

More than fifty employers were in Selma Wednesday at a job fair looking for qualified workers. Job opportunities with a wide range of skill levels were available with pay ranging from minimum wage — on up.

“This is actually part of our strategic plan for the Alabama Department of Labor,” said AL-DOL Comissioner Fitzgerald Washington. “To focus on counties that have traditionally high unemployment,”

Gabrielle Smith of Selma was one of hundreds of job seekers who attended the job fair.

“I’ve been looking, searching, trying to find a job and now I come here, its a bunch of opportunities that I didn’t know about,” said Smith.
