Law enforcement officers in Butler County are training themselves on what they should do if there were ever an active shooter situation in a school.
In years past, first responding officers would hold a position outside and wait for back up at a school. But since the tragic school shootings at Columbine, Virginia Tech and Sandy Hook, law enforcement made several changes to the way they train.
“Now, the focus is on, no matter if it’s one officer, two officers, or ten officers, when the first one gets there, he goes in and addresses the threat to try to save lives,” Lt. Justin Lovvorn of the Greenville Police Department told Alabama News Network.
Police hope to do more active shooter training in the future to continue to educate officers.
