Hornets Practice for 1st time in Full Gear

MONTGOMERY – The Alabama State University football program hit the field Monday in full pads for the first time in preseason camp. With the temperature again reaching triple digits on the field, the Hornets continue to show their passion and energy with their effort during the early days of camp.
“They flew around (in practice), but we still have a lot of work to do,” Head Coach Brian Jenkins said. “I tell people that this is the sixth practice and this is the sixth time this team has taken the field in nine months. We have a lot of work to do and we realize that, but the energy and attitude has been impressive and in that category I feel good. In the category of detail and execution we have a lot of work to do.”
With the practice being the first in full pads the players were ready to get in some physicality and there was a lot of hitting going on.
“There was definitely some excitement and it was good to see the guys look for contact and not shy away from contact,” Jenkins said. “Knowing that lets me know they want in the fight that’s coming so we have to teach them how to fight and go from there.”
The staff spent a lot of time with the offense and defense putting into practice what they have been learning through the first days of camp, but this time it was live and against competition.
“We did some good things (on offense) and we did some things not so good,” Jenkins added. “We’re still a work in progress and we will go back and look at film and see things we need to adjust and things we need to fix and like I said we still have a lot of work to do.”
“The defense is doing decent. Like I’ve said the energy and effort are there and the attitude is good. It’s just a lack of execution right now.”
This season Coach Jenkins will be hosting a press conference each Wednesday at 1 p.m. and that will begin this Wednesday, Aug. 12, at the Houston Markham Complex.
