After 50 years of marriage, First Lady Dianne Bentley has filed for a divorce. She filed court documents Friday morning shortly before making an appearance with Governor Robert Bentley. In the divorce filing, First Lady Bentley says, “There exists a conflict of personalities that which destroys the legitimate aims of matrimony and all possibilities of reconciliation are futile.” Dianne Bentley was just seen with the governor only a few hours after filing at an event at the governor’s mansion. Late this afternoon, Jennifer Ardis, Communications Director for Governor Bentley, released this statement on his behalf: “The Governor asks that you please respect the privacy of the Bentley family during this difficult time. There will be no further comment.” The two recently celebrated their 50th anniversary and have four children together. The first lady is seeking sole possession of the couple’s home in Tuscaloosa, as well as the car. She’s also asking for a fair alimony payment and since she can’t afford her own attorney, she wants the governor to cover the cost. Many people were surprised to hear the news. “Not in the least no, i thought this was a good done thing forever. I’m really shocked. I really am,” said William Smith. “When it comes to marriage you know, that’s a serious thing. so with that being said, I’d try my best to try and stick with it,” said Lucus Banks. “I’m shocked. I’ve never heard especially after 50 years you know. There’s possibly more to that story than we know but I can’t believe it really,” said Steve Steele.
