Gas Prices Drop Below $3 a Gallon For First Time In More Than a Year
Gas prices have been up and down for months. Drivers like Janice Dudley say she held out hope they would drop below $3 a gallon.
“Yes, I did. I believed that, because I believe in the power of prayer,” she said.
That’s especially important for people with long commutes.
“It certainly helps me because I have to pay a lot for gas, you know, back and forth.”
Other drivers say they can think of better places to spend their money than the tank.
“I’m glad because it’s the holiday season, a lot of people have a lot of places to go, and it makes it easier to do grocery shopping, I mean, Christmas shopping,” said Donald Boyd.
In Montgomery, prices are averaging $3 a gallon Friday. That’s down four cents from a week ago and fourteen cents from a month ago. Still, not all drivers say the price drop will have a big impact on their plans.
“I still don’t think the gas prices are down where they should be. I mean, overall, gas prices are still higher than they were four or five years ago, and I don’t think that $2.99 are really where gas prices ought to be,” said Ginger Greg.
“The car I drive, it don’t make a whole lot of difference, when you drive a small car and get good gas mileage, it doesn’t really make any difference,” said Robert Meeks.
But other drivers say, the less money they have to spend at the pump, the more they can spend enjoying the holidays.
“You save money for gas, so you got more money to spend on Christmas stuff,” Boyd said.
Gas prices in Alabama are lower than the national average, which is now $3.20 a gallon. In Montgomery, the lowest price we saw for gas was $2.95, while the highest is $3.19.
