Selma neighborhood revitalization project beginning to take shape
From the West Alabama Newsroom–
A revitalization project is starting to take shape in a Selma neighborhood devastated by the January 12th tornado — and years of neglect.
The 1400 block of Washington Street is undergoing a welcome transformation.
Some of the dilapidated houses that lined the street for years — are gone and construction of four new homes — is nearing completion.
“We have 3 bedroom, 2 baths which is our Whitney Lake model,” said project manager Lemont Williams.
“Then we have the Core Cottage, which is roughly around 1200 square feet. And it’s a 2 bedroom, 2 bath house.”
“Oh, it’s gorgeous. It’s pretty. And once you walk in you feel like you at home,” said Marzetta Reeves.
People who live on the block — say they like what they see happening. And they’d like to see it done — on the rest of the block.
“I was glad to see them come in the neighborhood. That way somebody would have a nicer house,” said Reeves.
The project is part of an initiative aimed at revitalizing neighborhoods — devastated by the January 12th tornado. It offers the chance for people to become homeowners — with no money down — no closing costs — and no credit score consideration.
“I am on they list. So, I’m trying as well to get a better opportunity at a better place to live where I won’t have to worry about the roof falling in on me, or me falling through the floor,” said Reeves.
NACA plans to provide a total of 100 of the new homes in the city of Selma.
NACA will be raffling off a new home Sunday.
