WATCH: Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed speaks on police chief’s resignation

Action 8 News provided live, breaking news coverage of a news conference this afternoon as Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed spoke about the resignation of Police Chief Darryl Albert.

Albert had been placed on administrative leave earlier this month. At the time, Reed did not provide a reason why. Albert then submitted his resignation yesterday.

At the news conference, Reed said there were several issues, including sexual harassment and department morale, that led to Albert being put on paid leave. He would not go into specifics.

Reed said that when Albert submitted his resignation, they both mutually agreed that the department needed a new voice and a new direction. He said Albert wished everyone involved nothing but the best.

Reed said the last week or so has been a trying time. He said that while crime is improving statistically, it doesn’t feel that way to him with the recent rash of shootings across the city.

Albert was introduced as chief by Reed in 2022, bringing more than 30 years of experience in law enforcement and who had most recently served as commander of the Special Operations Division for the New Orleans Police Department.

Reed said today that Albert had credible references nationally that were very strong and clear.

One issue facing the department is staffing. Reed said there are currently 293 officers in the Montgomery Police Department. He said an ideal number to have is 350. He said that departments across the state are also facing staff shortages due to retirement and the job market.

Deputy Chief John Hall, who is Chief of Investigations, was named acting chief on April 10. Reed says there will not be a rush to find a permanent chief. He said the job will be posted and internal candidates will be considered.
