Developers speak out after Montgomery mayor vetoes approved zoning request

The developers of proposed student housing apartments in Montgomery are speaking out after Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed vetoed the city council’s approval for a rezoning request last month.

In June, developers David and Catherine Douglas, of Douglas Homes, LLC, went to the Montgomery City Council to have four lots on Carter Hill Road between Sanford Street and West Haven Lane rezoned from office to residential. The apartments would have served students at Alabama State University and Huntingdon College.

The city council approved the rezoning request, but Mayor Reed later vetoed the approval. Mayor Reed lives not far from the proposed project.

The city council took up the veto in its meeting earlier this week, but the effort to overturn it failed by one vote.

The developers, who are from Montgomery, say they are disappointed in the outcome and would welcome the opportunity to sit down and discuss the matter with the mayor.

The developers tell Action 8 News that the four lots have been on the market for more than four years.
