Montgomery man convicted of beating his grandmother to death

A Montgomery man has been convicted in the death of his grandmother. As you can imagine, the past five years have been difficult for the Perryman family, knowing that their beloved grandmother was killed by one of her own grandchildren. A Montgomery jury has convicted John Michael Perryman of breaking into his 79-year-old grandmother’s house and beating her to death five years ago.

Friday afternoon, the family of Evelyn Perryman stood alongside Montgomery District Attorney Daryl Bailey and members of the Montgomery Police Department. Bailey talked about how on in June of 2019 Perryman broke into his grandmother’s house and senselessly and violently beat her to death, leaving her in a pool of her own blood. He then stole her car. The DA’s office and Interim Chief of Police James Graboys emphasized that crimes like this will not be tolerated, and they will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

District Attorney Daryl Bailey said, “In this very courtroom, a jury made up of citizens of Montgomery County yesterday rendered a verdict guilty of capital murder. And what that means, and I hope everyone listening pays attention, that means that he will be sentenced in just a few weeks to life without the possibility of parole. ” Bailey made a point to say that Perryman will take his last breath in the department of corrections, and that he will never walk the streets as a free man again, because that is the penalty for committing murder in the City of Montgomery.

Evelyn Perryman was described by family members as a gentle soul who always tried to help others. Rosalind McCain, who is the oldest daughter of Evelyn Perryman , tells us, “Of all the grandchildren, he was the one that it seemed she did the most for, if that makes sense. She took him in when his mom put him out. She provided him with a place to live. She fed him, she clothed him. Even after she had to put him out, she would still allow him to come by, and (was) doing things for him. But, that was the hard part, knowing that a family member would do something like that.”
