The Mustangs are looking to improve off of their 3-7 record from a year ago. This will be head coach Hunter Adams 2nd year in the role with the Mustangs.
Adams excited about the unity of this year’s group and their desire to be the best that they can be.
“We’ve got a great group of kids. They’re very motivated, intrinsically, you know I don’t have to pull it out of them. They come to work everyday, they do it with a great attitude, they handle themselves in the classroom the way that they should. We don’t have bad practices, because they don’t allow us to have bad practices, we don’t have bad workouts because they keep the energy turned up all the way,” explains Adams.
A big point of emphasis of the team this year according to senior wide receiver Jamari Coleman has been physicality.
“Coach wanted us to get to the point where people wake up after playing us, and they go I don’t want to play this team anymore,” says Coleman.
Another big focus for the team this season according to Adams is winning in the “critical moments” and being able to close out the fourth quarter. To help his team achieve this, Adams explains that his team keeps the level of intensity the same at every practice.
“We talk about winning critical moments all the time. You win the critical moments with character and execution. This group is wired to face those moments, to face that adversity, to really attack those moments, not back down from them, and not crumple in the face of them,” explains Adams.
One person that the Mustangs will be without this season is their three year starting quarterback Jacob Bryant. Back in January Adams explains that the race for the QB1 spot began. After the race began to narrow down during spring training junior Zac Holcombe emerged as the leader in the race.
“He’s a tremendous athlete, he’s a very stern solid kid, he doesn’t get up, he doesn’t get down, he’s stedfast in the way that he approaches everything. You know that goes a long way. He’s hard to get rattled, he’s a really good athlete, I think he’s got a chance to make somethings happen for us,” says Adams.
The Mustangs open up their 2024 season on August 23rd at home against Marbury.
