Paddlers in 6th Annual Great Alabama 650 race through Selma
From the West Alabama Newsroom–
The longest paddle race in the U.S. is currently underway here in Alabama.
The Annual Great Alabama 650 — is a 650-mile non-stop race showcasing Alabama waterways — using kayaks — canoes — and stand-up paddleboards.
Eighteen professional paddlers are racing along the Alabama Scenic River Trail on their way to the finish line in Mobile.
Paddlers say the race is a test of stamina, endurance and mental toughness.
“We’re not out there doing a full sprint cause you’re out there for so long,” said Ryan Gillikin.
“It’s just mentally, how long can you keep going. And how little sleep can you get by with. It’s a lot of mental game preparation, preparedness gear, as much as the athleticism.”
