Final campaigning stretch for District 2 Congressional candidates
Republican nominee Caroleene Dobson and Democratic nominee Shomari Figures are in the final stretch of campaigning to represent Alabama’s 2nd Congressional District. The 2nd Congressional District was redrawn by a federal court after a lengthy redistricting battle, and the seat could play a role in the struggle for control of the U.S. House of Representatives.
As both candidates make their final pitches to voters, one thing they both agree on is that securing the southern border of the United States is necessary for the safety of our nation.
“Here in Montgomery, less than two months ago, a sex trafficking ring was shut down in this district. We have I-10 and I-65, and that is a main thoroughfare for illegal drugs coming across our southern border and human trafficking. During the Biden-Harris-Figures administration, ICE has reported that over 662,000 people with known criminal histories have come across our southern border. The Biden Harris administration has lost track of 320,000 minors at the border, many of whom have probably been subjected to human trafficking, so it is truly a humanitarian crisis that this administration has invited,” said Dobson.
“Making sure we have this efficient staff on the border to cover the areas that we need to cover (is important), but we also must make investments in the technology to better secure the border. The border is huge, and it’s impossible to get eyes on every square inch of the border, so we have to leverage technology where we can, we have to leverage barriers where we can replace ones that that need to be replaced, and add new ones where they are strategically necessary,” said Figures.
Republican Caroleene Dobson says her top priorities if elected would be addressing crime, securing funding for rural hospitals, and the economy.
“Alabama families are suffering due to skyrocketing inflation 45% of Alabama families say that they struggle to pay week to week bills and we have got to have relief. We have got to cut the reckless government spending. We’ve got to be energy independent and we’ve got to regulate so that small businesses can thrive,” said Dobson.
Democrat Shomari Figures says his top three priorities will be to create more economic opportunities in District 2, make greater investments in Alabama’s public education system, and expand Medicaid to keep rural hospitals open.
“We have to again go to Washington and pass the legislation to incentivize the state of Alabama to expand Medicaid. That will provide health insurance access for north of 300,000 people across the state. Just doing some simple math, that’s north of 50,000 or so people just here in this district alone, and we have seen the ramifications of what happens when we do not have Medicaid expanded in this state. Just since we’ve been in this race, we’ve lost four hospitals in the counties in this district, and two counties already didn’t have a hospital to start with,” said Figures.
Another point both candidates agree on – every vote matters. They encourage voters to make time in the day to head to the polls and let their voices be heard.
