Montgomery man dead in series of crashes on I-65 in Butler County

23butlercountyAction 8 News is getting more details regarding a multi-vehicle crash in Butler County earlier this week.

The crash happened around 11:55 a.m. Tuesday on I-65 near the 122 mile marker, approximately six miles south of Greenville.

Troopers say 34-year-old Thaddeus Richardson, Jr., of Montgomery, was fatally injured when the 2014 Ford Mustang he was sitting in, was hit by a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado driven by 41-year-old Benjamin Carpenter, of Daphne.

Officials say the Mustang was stationary in the roadway because of being involved in a previous crash. The driver’s side door of the Mustang was open at the time of the collision which caused Richardson to be ejected. Richardson was later pronounced dead on the scene.

Before hitting the Mustang, the Chevrolet Silverado was struck in the rear end by a 2014 Kenworth tractor-trailer driven by 66-year-old Donald Richardson, of Hudson, FL.

After the collision with the Silverado, the Kenworth then struck a 2025 Freightliner tractor-trailer in the rear-end. The Freightliner was driven by 22-year-old Dontrell Dorsey, of Abbeville.

After hitting the Freightliner, the Kenworth was struck in the rear-end by a 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe driven by 50-year-old David B. Colston, of Montgomery.

Carpenter was injured and transported to Greenville Regional Medical Center for treatment. A 1-year-old, who was a passenger in the Mustang, was also injured and transported to a local area hospital for treatment.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
