Kirk Johnson leaves Montgomery Catholic for Benjamin Russell

Two-time state championship coach Kirk Johnson is leaving Montgomery Catholic to take over the football program at Benjamin Russell High School.

Johnson compiled a 55-2 record in four seasons as head coach at Catholic, becoming the winningest coach in school history. He led the Knights to Class 4A and 5A state titles in consecutive years.

The move takes Johnson from Class 5A to 6A. Benjamin Russell finished 5-6 last season.

Johnson spent 11 years total at Montgomery Catholic, including his first seven as an assistant coach.

“We would like to thank Coach Johnson and his wife Meghan for their years of unwavering support for Montgomery Catholic Preparatory School,” Montgomery Catholic president Justin Castanza said. “I am so pleased for Kirk to have this opportunity to take the next step in his career after spending the majority of his coaching career learning and growing at MCPS. I am thankful for the years of dedication and service to the players, coaches, and families at Montgomery Catholic and wish him the absolute best in his new position.”

The statement said the search for  the next head football coach and coaching staff will begin immediately.

“The program that has been built at Montgomery Catholic will continue to grow and flourish and remains an attractive destination for high caliber coaches.”
