Montgomery County man convicted of 2020 shootings that killed 1, injured 2 others
A Montgomery County man has been convicted for his involvement in two separate shootings in 2020 that killed one person and injured two others.
District Attorney Azzie Oliver said Lorenzo Rainer was found guilty of two counts of assault second degree and murder.
Evidence at trial showed that Lorenzo Rainer shot Shane Hill and Kevin Sides on two separate days over a dispute about car parts. Rainer was living in a camper on land that he did not own and became irate when the victims came on to the property.
DA Oliver said Rainer shot both of the victims with a pistol. Hill and Sides survived the shooting incident and identified Rainer as the suspect.
On February 2, 2020, Dana Riley and his brother-in-law went to the same place where Hill and Sides were shot to get brake parts for the brother-in-law’s truck. While they were on the property, Rainer opened fire with an AK-47 style rifle, killing Riley. He was identified by the brother-in-law as the shooter.
Further evidence at trial showed Riley was attempting to surrender after being shot the first time. He was then shot at least one more time. He died on the scene.
“I am proud that my team of prosecutors could bring justice to the victims of this habitual violent offender,” said District Attorney Oliver. “My office will always be dedicated to aggressively prosecuting violent crimes. We will be seeking sentences of life and life without parole for these convictions, so that this violent felon will never again be free on the streets of Montgomery.”
Rainer will be sentenced on April 7, 2025 by Judge Brooke Reid. Because of his nine prior felony convictions, he faces a sentencing range of 15 years to life on the two assault convictions, and either life or life without parole for the murder conviction.
