Black and Gold Game wraps up Alabama State spring football
The Alabama State Hornets concluded their spring camp Saturday with the annual Black and Gold Game, providing young players their first opportunity to perform in front of ASU fans.
Multiple quarterbacks took snaps during the scrimmage, including Kareem Keye, who filled in last season for injured starter Andrew Body. Body, still recovering from a shoulder injury, was present on the sidelines encouraging teammates. Hornets head coach Eddie Robinson said he will return for fall.
“The guys moved around well, and that’s what we wanted to see, guys making plays,” said Robinson. “We didn’t tackle, so it was just a thud, but we were trying to be efficient. We had four penalties, so that’s the biggest thing, is cut down on those.”
Robinson highlighted several standout performances from the Black and Gold Game, including Coastal Carolina transfer running back Jahbari Kuykendall.
“He’s been playing really well, been playing well all spring, so he did a really good job,” Robinson said. “Some of my big offensive linemen. Phillip McLean, a young guy that’s trying to make that next step to show that he can play. It’s fun watching those young guys who were not ready last year but now they’re kind of turning the corner.”
