Construction company owner enters Pike Road mayor’s race
Construction company owner Mark Spurlin is challenging longtime Pike Road Mayor Gordon Stone in this year’s city elections.
Spurlin made the announcement today.
“Our town has seen impressive attention-grabbing growth over the last few years, but unfortunately our response to that fast-paced growth has become haphazard and lacking in intentionality. In recent years, this momentum has shifted to an undeniable concern of many. The time to reevaluate the future of Pike Road as a community and come forth with a fresh, objective perspective is now,” Spurlin said in a statement.
Pike Road, which is located to the east and southeast of Montgomery in Montgomery County, has been one of the fastest-growing towns in Alabama. Its current population is estimated to be more than 11,000, growing from around 300 people in 2000, including through annexation.
Spurlin, a Montgomery native, has degrees from Mississippi State University and Auburn University. He owns Mark Spurlin Construction Company, while his wife owns Jessica Spurlin Interiors. They have three daughters.
Current Mayor Gordon Stone has held office since 2004 and is the executive director of the Higher Education Partnership.
Pike Road’s elections for mayor and council are August 26.
