New MPS superintendent releases statement after board approves hiring
Dr. Zickeyous Bird, the new superintendent for Montgomery Public Schools, has released a statement after the Montgomery County Board of Education approved his hiring Tuesday night:
“I am deeply honored and humbled to serve as the next superintendent of Montgomery Public Schools. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to the Montgomery community and the Board of Education for entrusting me with this sacred responsibility.
This moment is not just about leadership—it is about collective purpose. I believe in the boundless potential of every child and am committed to ensuring that each student, regardless of background or zip code, is seen, valued, and given the opportunity to thrive. I will work tirelessly to foster a spirit of unity among educators, families, and community members so that we may rise together in service of our children.
I look forward to listening, learning, and leading alongside our dedicated teachers, school leaders, district staff, families, political leaders, and business leaders. Together, we will accelerate learning and create a sense of joy and excellence in Montgomery Public Schools.”
Dr. Byrd received four yes votes from the board over Dr. Harold Wright, the Deputy Superintendent of Achievement and Leadership at Crowley Independent School District in Fort Worth, Texas.
Dr. Byrd was formerly the superintendent of Selma City Schools before stepping down in August 2024.
The MPS superintendent position became open when Dr. Melvin Brown resigned last year after about two years on the job.
