A group of Selma High School graduates are back in Selma this weekend to celebrate a major milestone.
The Selma High School Class of 1975 — is celebrating its 50th class reunion and graduation anniversary.
They’ve come from near and far to take part in the festivities.
Some have come from across town — and some have travelled from as far as New York City and Portland, Oregon.
“Coming back to Selma this weekend is going to be very exciting for me,” said Lewis Walter.
“We’ll get a chance to reminisce. We’ll look back and see some things that, you know see some people and talk about some times gone by,” said Dr. Donald Jefferson.
It’s the first time many of them have been back in Selma — since they graduated.
They say a lot has changed in the city — and at the school since then.
“Back in that days we were not in uniforms,” said Barbara Wright Cowan.
“We wore what we wanted to wear you know, bell bottoms, high stacked shoes, converse tennis shoes, natural hair and uh, afro puffs.”
“We had integrated schools but now I think Selma High don’t have, it’s not integrated like when we was there,” said Walter.
“That’s one of the things that I see and the way the city is.”
“Selma was kind of booming, Selma was kind of the heartbeat of the Black Belt at that time,” said Jefferson.
“Cities like Greenville and Demopolis, Prattville couldn’t hold a candle to Selma at that time because we had Craig Field.”
Reunion activities for the class — have been planned for the entire weekend.
“And we are excited. I mean, we are going to have a wonderful time,” Jefferson said.
There will be a meet and greet Friday night.
Then a tour of Selma High Saturday morning — followed by brunch — and a banquet later that evening.
