Athletes compete at Special Olympics State Games at Troy University

Athletes from across Alabama competed in the annual State Special Olympics games at Troy University.

The games kicked off at 7 AM Saturday, May 24. Athletes with physical and intellectual challenges got to participate in sports like track and field, gymnastics, swimming, golf, bowling and the traditional Italian game bocce. The activities continued with a torch run on University Avenue.

The games shines a light on the special athletes and let them enjoy a day solely focused on their abilities.

“Personally, I enjoyed this because I had found that those with special needs and those that participate in the Special Olympics are the most genuine and kind people I have ever had the opportunity to be around,” Troy University Fitness and Wellness Coordinator Wesley Taylor told Action 8 News. “So for me, it’s a source of happiness to be involved with a group of individuals that are always positive and optimistic when life has given them every reason, maybe not to be.”

The athletes also got to take a shot at making their own music videos, complete with a green screen and their choice of music.
