Action 8 Political Analyst Steve Flowers: Tuberville will be tough to challenge in governor’s race
Action 8 News was in Auburn this afternoon as U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville announced that he is running for governor. Our political analyst Steve Flowers says it will be tough for anyone to challenge him.
The announcement was made live on the Fox News Channel, with Tuberville speaking to Action 8 News afterward, saying that he will focus on manufacturing jobs, illegal immigration, education and making sure graduates stay in Alabama once they leave school.
Steve Flowers says it’s a different political era to have candidates turning to national media to make their campaign announcements.
“In bygone days, a person running for governor in Alabama would announce on the Capitol steps in Montgomery and have a big throng around them. A person running for governor now is doing it on Fox News. So everything has become nationalized.
“It’s changed so much in my lifetime. But he really is in the catbird’s seat because he’s recognized. He has tremendous name ID and it’s also known that he’s conservative. That’s the key element right there,” Flowers said.
Tuberville says for now, he will work to pass President Trump’s agenda in his remaining 18 months in Washington. His U.S. Senate seat is up for election in 2026, so it will likely be a race that will attract many candidates, even if the governor’s race does not. So far, Tuberville is the only person in the race.
The Alabama primaries are on May 19, 2025.
