Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office warns of scam
The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office has issued a warning of a scam that may be spreading in our area.
It says an ongoing phone scam involves scammers impersonating law enforcement. The scammers falsely claim that a person has an arrest warrant, missed jury duty or owes a fine.
The sheriff’s office says these scams often originate in foreign countries but with current technology, they can spoof official law enforcement phone numbers and use real names of deputies and officials.
The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office says it will never request payment over the phone to avoid arrest, cancel a warrant or make any threats.
If you receive a call making such requests, simply hang up. If you have fallen victim and have sent money to one of these scammers, please contact your local law enforcement agency to file a report.
