Marbury flag football prepares for second season

Last year Marbury High School fielded a flag football team for the first time ever. The Bulldogs learned the game quickly and made it to the second round of the state playoffs.

Now entering their second season, the Bulldogs say they’re more confident and ready to show the newcomers the ropes while setting their sights on an even deeper postseason run.

The experience from last season has made a significant difference for the returning players.

“So now that we’re going into a second year program, said Savannah Bowden, a Marbury senior center, “some of us have experience, and I think that just helps us out this year, because last year, going into our first year, everyone had a bit of nerves, and everyone was going in a little bit blind, and we’re just much more prepared this season,”

The veteran players are now taking on mentorship roles with the newer team members. Emma Hays, a sophomore quarterback and linebacker, said the focus is on “working on teaching our younger girls to get in the habit that the older girls have been getting of all the routes and the signs of our routes, and really just how to read the game.”

Marbury flag football coach Zachary Cummings, who is in his first year coaching flag football after transitioning from traditional football, is emphasizing fundamentals with his squad.

“Speed and agility route running, really understanding the game of football and how the schemes work for flag– really making a lot of connections between the two. Because this is my first year over here, doing flag coming from football, trying to learn myself, just learn how to really grow as a coach, to coach the girls and get them to where they need to be,” Cummings said.
