What the Tech: why you should install the new I-Phone update

iOS 26 has a lot of new features. Some of them you will love and some of them you’ll dislike so
much you’ll want to go back to the previous iOS. What’s new?

First up, Liquid Glass. Icons now have a translucent, floating 3D effect. It’s sleek but can make
some elements harder to see. You also get more customization options. The clock blends into
your wallpaper instead of covering it up like with this photo of my cats. You can also enlarge the
clock on both the lock and home screens.

The phone app is changing. Spam calls will be filtered into a separate folder without ringing, but
voicemail and missed call notifications are trickier to find. You’ll need to tap through a new menu
to see them. And spam messages get sent to their own folder too.

A standout feature is call screening. When an unknown caller rings, iOS will answer first, ask
who’s calling and why, and let you decide whether to pick it up .

Live translations are a game changer. On Facetime you’ll see translated captions as someone
speaks another language. On phone calls you’ll hear live translations.

*No, I don’t have to work”

It’s not perfectly instant but does make conversations across languages easier.
And for a smaller, but welcome change, there are new ringtones. If you’re tired of the familiar “Reflection” tone, there’s a fresh option called “Alt 1”, so your phone won’t sound like everyone else’s.

So you may be asking, when should I install the update.

It’s been in beta for a few months and most of the bugs have been worked out. When you do
decide when to install it, back up your phone. Download and install it when you’re at home and
on your home Wifi Network
