Shooting causes high school football game cancellation in Orrville
From the West Alabama Newsroom–
The Dallas County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting incident that caused officials to cancel a high school football game.
Chief Deputy John Hatfield says the Keith High School Bears were hosting the Maplesville Red Devils Friday night when the sudden sound of gunfire erupted during the game causing officials to cut the game short.
“When the gunshots rang out, players and officials hit the ground on the field because it sounded like it was a lot closer than it was,” Hatfield said.
“The officials met and figured it was in the best interest of everybody to cancel the game at that time.”
Hatfield says the shots were fired from a clearing on County Road 713, a nearby road located about a few hundred yards away from JV Caldwell Memorial Field, where the football game was being played.
“It was somebody being stupid that could have easily hurt someone. So we’re in the process of finding the perpetrator at this time. We feel confident that we should make an arrest on it. We have a vehicle description. Not ready to release that at this time, but it was totally unrelated to the football game or the school.
