Former Prattville Winn-Dixie reopens as Piggly Wiggly

The former Winn-Dixie store on East Main Street in Prattville has reopened as a Piggly Wiggly, as Winn-Dixie continues its exit from Alabama and other states.

Store managers say they are glad to be able to keep the store operating under new ownership and a new brand. The associates of Winn-Dixie were offered jobs at Piggly Wiggly and have remained under the transition.

Action 8 News talked to shoppers about the change.

“I was quite surprised to be honest, because normally I’ve seen Piggly Wigglys and this one was so big. I’ve never experienced as big as this one was,” Mellissa Dodd said.

“It’s a adjustment, have to get used to it. I saw some new things, and I’ve always shopped at Winn-Dixie so I’m going to give it a try and just see what it’s like,” Sandy Cowart said.

“I shopped at both of them you know. Winn-Dixie has been here a long time, you know, they always had great meats, produce, so it’s been good for the community,” Ernest Morris said.

As Action 8 News has reported, Winn-Dixie is closing or selling stores in Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana and most of Georgia so that it can focus on its home state of Florida. Some stores in extreme south Georgia will remain open.

As we’ve reported, Winn-Dixie locations in Montgomery and Wetumpka will soon become Piggly Wiggly Food for Less. The sale of stores in Millbrook and Opelika are still pending.

Other stores, such as those in Selma, Auburn and on Carter Hill Road in Montgomery, were purchased by Aldi. The Selma and Auburn stores have already opened as Aldi locations, while the one on Carter Hill Road is still being converted.

Winn-Dixie had a major presence in our part of Alabama for decades. Over the years, the number of stores dwindled.

Piggly Wiggly operates primarily in the South and Midwest. It is an affiliate of C&S Wholesale Grocers. C&S also supplies Winn-Dixie with food and other items.
