City of Montgomery marks Veterans Day with parade, resource fair, ceremony and new tribute

The City of Montgomery is marking Veterans Day with several activities, and is introducing a new tribute to veterans.

The commemoration began with a Veterans Day Parade on Dexter Avenue. It featured military units, high school bands, civic organizations and local veterans groups, all marching in tribute to those who served.

Aretha Dix told Action 8 News what she wanted to show by taking part.

“That we care, and we honor you for your service. We honor everyone for their time and commitment as they serve throughout the city of Montgomery and the River Region, and we also have people that have come from outside of the River Region, so we just want people to know that Montgomery is a hub for our veterans and our veterans resources.”

“I’m glad to be a retired reservist and I take it as an honor to be presented this day, and people always tell you, ‘Thank you for your service,’ that goes farther than I can ever say,” Veteran Betty Bailey said.

“Veterans Day in Montgomery is more than a single event; it is a profound declaration of gratitude from our entire community,” Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed said. “As a Regional Veterans Day Site, we are committed to providing our veterans with a fitting tribute and essential resources. This year, we are especially excited to launch our ‘Hometown Heroes’ banner program, giving families a lasting way to honor their loved ones who have served.”

Following the parade, a Resource Fair was held at Riverwalk Stadium, offering on-site connections to vital services in areas such as healthcare, education benefits, employment and mental health support. Immediately after, the City held its official ceremony to honor veterans.

In addition to those events, the City is adding a new year-round tribute to military veterans. It is launching the Montgomery Hometown Heroes Banner Program to visually honor local veterans year-round.

This program allows family and friends to purchase commemorative banners that will be hung on poles throughout the downtown area. Each banner will feature the veteran’s photo, name, rank, years served and branch of service.

The City of Montgomery has been recognized by the Department of Veterans Affairs as a prestigious Regional Veterans Day Site.
