ACTION 8 UPDATE: Man killed in officer-involved shooting in Opp
ACTION 8 UPDATE: A man who was the subject of a manhunt in Opp has been killed in an officer-involved shooting.
Local and state law enforcement officers had been on a manhunt for 51-year-old Amos Matthews of Opp. The Covington County Sheriff’s Office said he had fired at police officers in the Opp area. Sheriff Blake Turman says Matthews had felony warrants and had been seen near the area of Barnes Street and Pond Drive in Opp.
ALEA says Matthews brandished a gun, causing officers to fire at him. ALEA says Matthews then fled the scene into a nearby wooded area, which is what prompted the manhunt.
This afternoon, officers with the Opp Police Department along with an ALEA Special Agent encountered Matthews on the front porch of a home on Childre Court in Opp. During the course of the encounter, while brandishing a firearm, ALEA says Matthews attempted to flee, causing the officers and Special Agent to fire and shoot Matthews.
Matthews was struck and pronounced dead at the scene.
Once ALEA completes an investigation, the findings will be turned over to the Covington County District Attorney’s Office.
ALEA says the following agencies took part in the manhunt: ALEA SBI Special Agents, ALEA Highway Patrol Troopers, ALEA’s Aviation Unit, officers with Alabama Bureau of Pardons and Paroles, officers with Opp Police Department and deputies with Covington County Sheriff’s Office.
