Two gift giving events in Selma are making sure that hundreds of children have a Merry Christmas this holiday season.
The 11th Annual Books — Basketballs– and Baby-Dolls giveaway — provides free toys — clothes — and books for kids — for Christmas and Kwaanza.
“And my kids are very, very grateful,” said Christina Spearman. “It’s honestly amazing because you don’t know everybody’s stories.
Organizer Faya Rose Toure says the event is about more than just toys.
She says it’s a way to elevate the whole child — by developing their minds — bodies — and spirits.
“We all can make Selma a better place and the Black Belt a better place if we take what we have and make what we need,” she said.
“We don’t need millions of dollars, we need a committed people that’s willing to lift up the children. When we lift up the children, we lift up the community.”
100 Black Men of Selma also hosted its annual Joy Jubilee Toy Giveaway.
“We do this because this is a season of giving. When you are blessed you have a responsibility to be a blessing,” said Young.
“And so, we just want to go out, sow some love during this holiday season. Let these young people know that we love them and we want them to have a Merry and a happy Christmas.”
North Star Beloved Community Corporation — the National Voting Rights Museum — and the Bridge Crossing Jubilee all partner to sponsor the annual Books — Basketballs– and Baby-Dolls giveaway.
