Tonight the city council paved the way for services like Uber to be available for Montgomery residents.
Smartphone users across the globe use the ridesharing service to catch a lift.
Uber is an app that allows user to request a ride from people driving their own cars. The council passed an ordinance that would allow the service to be up and running in basically two weeks. This ordinance would require Uber drivers to have their vehicle inspected in a 15 day time period. Uber will also background check drivers and the city will continue to background check cab drivers.
Willie Sayer, President Yellow Cab Company Montgomery said, “When Uber says they are going to put four to six hundred cars in the city of Montgomery, I mean for a city that only has 35 cabs in it right now, that’s a little over saturation.”
Trevor Theunissen, Uber Public Policy Manager Southeast said, “There’s a lot of under served neighborhoods without transportation access in Montgomery, high DUI rates, I think there’s a lot of benefits that it will bring to Montgomery. As well as provided extra income to drivers, regular citizens who can sign up to earn extra income. on a part time basis I think that will be hugely impactful to the city.”
Uber expects to have roughly 100 drivers off the bat and expects for Montgomery’s population size anywhere from 400 to 600. These are most part time people who may drive about 2 to 3 hours a week. The first Uber drivers can hit the road once the council approves their business license at the next meeting.
