Montgomery Public Schools has welcomed athletes to Park Crossing High School for the 2026 Special Olympics.
The day started this morning with a parade, an opening ceremony and then the athletes started their competitions.
Students from 11 middle and high schools participated with a total of around 140 student athletes.
Special Olympians showed determination, teamwork and school pride as they took part in events and received awards afterward.
“I want the spectators to understand, anybody watching to understand, how hard the students have worked and also that they are competing against their neighboring schools to showcase their talents and their athletic ability and they are revved up and ready to go,” Katrina Jackson, the executive director for Special Olympics at Montgomery Public Schools, told Action 8 News.
“Today is more than about a competition today is about joy today is about the spirit of teamwork today again is about celebrating most talented and dedicated students that we have right here in Montgomery Public Schools,” Montgomery Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Zickeyous Byrd said.
The winners of today’s competitions will go on to the Alabama Special Olympics at Troy University.
