Shelters Prep for Influx of Guests during Freezing Temps

Shelters across the area get ready to house more guests as temperatures dip below freezing Friday night.

Cots line the hallways at the Salvation Army.
It’s one of those nights where Shelter Director Jason Davis says they will have 75 to 80 people.

“Definitely expecting a full house tonight. As you can see, we are already filled to capacity right now. We have cots in the hallway. We have our regular dorms are filled so these are cots that are in our cold night program,” said Jason Davis.

The cold night program allows guests to come in when the weather is 45 degrees and below.
And if it’s that cold during the day, the Salvation Army welcomes them to come inside to get warm at their warming station.

“It’s a real blessing to have a place like this and it could be a whole lot worse if you didn’t have a place like this at all,” said guest Britian Pettway.

Across town at Friendship Mission, they are also getting ready for an influx of guests seeking warm shelter as they are preparing to feed and house more people.
Mattresses are ready to be pulled out for at least 15 people they are expecting on this cold night.

Danny Mitchell is one of them.

“It’s a good place to be and they look out for you,” said Mitchell.
