Local faith leaders call for end of Confederate holidays recognized by the State of Alabama

A prayer vigil led by some Montgomery faith leaders and ‘Faith in Action Alabama’ took place outside the First White House of the Confederacy. They want to end the observance of Alabama’s 3 Confederate holidays. Currently, the state of Alabama recognizes Confederate Memorial Day, Robert E. Lee Day, and Jefferson Davis’ Birthday as state holidays.

At the vigil, people expressed their belief that these holidays are rooted in division and oppression. They also spoke about a renewed moral vision for Alabama, including developing a thriving public school system and creating a fair and equitable justice system.
