Montgomery Rotary Club presents checks to Friendship Mission
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WAKA) – The Montgomery Rotary Club has presented checks to Friendship Mission to help with its efforts in serving the homeless.
The Montgomery Rotary Club’s annual charity luncheon was held Monday, May 4, at the RSA Activity Center.
First, the club presented $5,700 to Friendship Mission Executive Director Tara Davis, which will help the mission create an outdoor space for people at its shelters.
The second check was a surprise additional $2,500 to go to the mission’s soup kitchen.
In 2024, the soup kitchen provided more than 66,000 meals. It feeds people in need, not just those staying at its shelter for men and the shelter for women/children.
The club chose Friendship Mission as the group it would help this year because of its mission to provide shelter, food and services to the area’s homeless.
“Our club recognizes some of the deep-rooted issues that Montgomery is challenged with right now, and I believe that one of them is the homeless population,” Montgomery Rotary Club President Kimberly Baker told Action 8 News. “We really wanted to help them and actually, we have worked with multiple groups throughout the year serving the homeless population. Jesus City, we’ve brought them in and helped them with resources. The Friendship Mission, of course, is our grant recipient this year. We have volunteered this year to help serve the homeless. So, we have kind of just rallied around that one cause this year and multiple others.”
Friendship Mission got its start in 1996.
The Montgomery Rotary Club was founded in 1913, and through its foundation, has donated more than $1.5 million to the community.
