Councilwoman Marche Johnson absent from Montgomery City Council meeting as questions swirl around her residence

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WAKA) – The Montgomery City Council met this evening, and notably missing was Councilwoman Marche Johnson.

As Action 8 previously reported, Montgomery County property records show that Johnson purchased a home in District 7 with a VA loan, which requires the military member to live in the residence.

Johnson has represented District 3 since 2021. At the Council meeting this evening, there was no discussion on the matter, and City Council President C.C. Calhoun told Action 8 that he asked her to not attend the meeting, until the City Council gathers all the facts.

Calhoun also told Action 8 that a measure on the matter may be taken at the next meeting.

“Councilor Johnson has assured me that she lives within District 3, so we’re doing a fact finding exercise to try and figure it out,” Montgomery City Council President, C.C. Calhoun, told Action 8. “We know what was reported. As of right now, in the Council’s opinion, she is still a Council member until proven otherwise, so that’s what we’re looking at at this point.”

Calhoun also went on to say that Johnson will have to provide the evidence that she lives in District 3.

“The burden of proof, I’m putting on her, the allegations are out there that she’s not living in her district, so prove the people wrong and continue serving the citizens that voted you into office. Next Council meeting, if it’s proven that she does not live in the district, then the Council will have to pass an ordinance to vacate the seat,” Montgomery City Council President, C.C. Calhoun, told Action 8 News.

The City of Montgomery Attorney’s Office chose not to provide comment about Johnson’s residency when asked by Action 8.
