Attorney for District 3 Councilor Marche Johnson releases statement
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WAKA) – An attorney representing Councilwoman Marche Johnson has released a statement refuting the allegations that she no longer lives in the district she serves.
Antonio D. Gray of the Law Office of A.D. Gray, LLC released this statement to Action 8 News:
“Councilwoman Johnson resides in District 3 and remains fully qualified to serve as its elected representative.
Recent public allegations and speculation regarding her residency do not alter the facts. Councilwoman Johnson remains committed to serving the residents of District 3 and continuing the work she was elected to perform on behalf of her constituents.
At this time, Councilwoman Johnson’s focus remains on addressing the needs of the community, advancing initiatives that improve the quality of life for residents, and moving District 3 forward.
We are confident that the facts will speak for themselves and will continue to address this matter through the appropriate channels.”
As Action 8 previously reported, Montgomery County property records show that Johnson purchased a home in District 7 with a VA loan, which requires the military member to live in the residence.
Johnson has represented District 3 since 2021. At the Council meeting this evening, there was no discussion on the matter, and City Council President C.C. Calhoun told Action 8 that he asked her to not attend the meeting, until the City Council gathers all the facts.
Calhoun also told Action 8 that a measure on the matter may be taken at the next meeting.
“Councilor Johnson has assured me that she lives within District 3, so we’re doing a fact finding exercise to try and figure it out,” Montgomery City Council President, C.C. Calhoun, told Action 8. “We know what was reported. As of right now, in the Council’s opinion, she is still a Council member until proven otherwise, so that’s what we’re looking at at this point.”
Calhoun also went on to say that Johnson will have to provide the evidence that she lives in District 3.
The next council meeting is set for Tuesday, June 16, at 5 p.m.
