UBERIn a unanimous vote, the Montgomery City Council has given the ride-sharing service Uber approval to operate in the Capital City.

Uber is a popular choice among millennials, as younger Americans seek new ways beyond traditional taxi services to get around. It allows travelers to hail a ride through a smartphone app and to pay electronically.

Uber had been on hold while council members determined what regulation it would face and whether or not Uber drivers would face the same guidelines as traditional taxi services. The council approved the measure without any discussion.

“It was never an issue of whether the city was ready to jump on the opportunity. It was all about getting a little more knowledge about Uber,” said Councilman David Burkette.

Uber had been on hold while council members determined what regulation it would face and whether or not Uber drivers would face the same guidelines as traditional taxi drivers.

“Uber is a different animal than the regular taxis, so you have to get past the fact that there is going to be government regulation. This is market driven with this app. Taxis can have the same thing. They can have an app. Now the market is going to decide. And its going to be a really good addition to Montgomery,” said Mayor Todd Strange.

Those who have been waiting for the service to come to the capital city say they’re looking forward to all that Uber has to offer.

“Cashless, if you will. Tipless, you can see where the vehicles are at, see pictures of the driver. It’s a safety issue you too. So you know who is coming to pick you up and when,” said Jeff Maxson.

“It’s 2016. Be your own boss, make your own money, don’t drive home drunk. It’s perfect,” said Cameron Reid.

The Mayor expects Uber to be available by the weekend.
