Pike County Extension Office Partners With Troy University Accounting Students to Offer Free Tax Services

“It gives me an opportunity to get out there and actually do it myself on my own in front of real people with real income and real families,” says Rhett Tucker.

These students are crunching numbers outside of the classroom. They are offering free tax services all while getting valuable experience for the future.

“We’ve learned all these kinds of deductions through taxes and and all these kinds of credits that you never would have thought of.”

It’s an ongoing partnership with the Pike County Extension Office and Troy University accounting students. John Dillard has taken advantage of the service for several years.

“I enjoy coming here because of the students that’s getting their education through this and learning how to do taxes and the people here are very very nice and understanding,” says Dillard.

“Most of them leave here with a a greater appreciation for performing public service but the other thing is they’re learning skills that they’re going to be taking with them when they graduate from from college and get out into the real world as CPA’s,” says Assistant Professor Dena Mitchell.

While the students say they are still learning coordinators for he program say they’ve seen growth in a short period of time.

“We see their confidence just soar a lot of times once they realize that they can actually deal well with clients.”

A priceless opportunity for students and Pike County residents. .

“It really helps us. It really gives you an understanding of how taxes work and applies in our everyday lives.”

The service is offered from 9:30 until 3:30 Monday through Wednesday and 1:30 until 3:30 on Thursday. It lasts until April 1st.
