New details in Wynlakes shooting that left one man injured
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WAKA) – Action 8 News has obtained new information in a shooting in East Montgomery that left a man seriously injured.
The shooting happened just before midnight on June 30 in the 9400 block of Dunleith in the Wynlakes community.
According to court records, while officers with the Montgomery Police Department were in route to the home, a state trooper with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency responded due to already being in the area.
The state trooper found the victim on the front porch with a gunshot wound to the chest. Court records say the trooper also found a handgun in the victim’s hand, which he was able to secure.
The state trooper also noticed 65-year-old Lynwood O’Mary armed with a rifle. O’Mary went back into the home and refused to come out until the state trooper was able to eventually arrest him.
The victim told an officer with the Montgomery Police Department that he and O’Mary had been involved in a fight when the suspect began to choke him.
The victim said he then punched O’Mary in the eye in an effort to get him off of him.
The victim said he tried to help O’Mary with his injuries by getting him a towel and then the suspect continued the argument.
Shortly after, the victim said O’Mary went into his bedroom to grab a handgun and shot him in chest after the victim tried to get the gun away from him.
The victim was taken to Baptist South with serious injuries, but was in stable condition.
O’Mary told police that he went into his bedroom to grab a gun, then asked the victim to leave. He said the second tussle occurred and during the altercation, the firearm went off hitting the victim.
O’Mary has been charged with attempted murder and is currently out on bond.
A preliminary hearing is set for August 12.
