Recount in Perry Co. primary race ends in dead heat

The Democratic primary race for the District 1 seat on the Perry Co. Commission — is not over just yet.

Waka Recount0709 PkgA recount of the ballots cast in the race took about seven hours to complete — and ended in a tie.

Marion businessman Donald Bennett defeated incumbent Albert Turner, Jr. in the primary by a single vote.

The Alabama Democratic Party ordered the recount after local party officials denied a recount request from Turner.

Sealed ballots from the District 1 primary election were opened — and fed into voting machines one by one.

Hours into the recount it was discovered that 35 ballots were missing. The ballots were eventually found by election officials and counted.

Both Bennett and Turner received 398 votes in the recount.
